Pusoy dos is the Filipino version of Big Two, the shedding game played across Asia. The name says it all: dos — the 2 — is the highest card. Be the first to get rid of all your cards and you win. It shares a name with pusoy, but the two games have nothing else in common.
Card ranks and the suit order
Cards rank from 3 (lowest) up through 10, J, Q, K, A, to 2 (highest). When two cards have the same rank, the suit decides. In the Philippine version recorded by pagat.com, the order from lowest to highest is:
♣ clubs < ♠ spades < ♥ hearts < ♦ diamonds
So the 3 of clubs is the lowest card in the deck and the 2 of diamonds the highest. Be careful: international Big Two uses a different order (spades highest, diamonds lowest), and some online apps follow that instead. Check the rules screen before your first game — it changes which cards beat which.
How to play Pusoy Dos
- Deal all 52 cards — 13 each with four players. With three players, deal 17 each and leave one card out.
- The 3 of clubs starts. Whoever holds it leads the first play, using it in their combination.
- Beat the last play or pass. Each player must play the same number of cards as the lead, and higher — a higher pair on a pair, a higher five-card hand on a five-card hand. Passing doesn’t lock you out; you can play again when it comes back round.
- Clear the table. When everyone else passes, the last player to play starts fresh with any combination they like.
- First to empty their hand wins.
Valid combinations
- Single — one card
- Pair — two of the same rank
- Triple — three of the same rank
- Five-card hands, from lowest to highest: straight, flush, full house, four of a kind (plus any one card), straight flush
Straights can’t wrap around: 2-A-K-Q-J isn’t a straight.
Scoring
Scoring is where house rules differ most. In the Philippine version pagat.com describes, the winner scores 1 point, doubled for each 2 in their final play (so 2, 4, 8 or 16). Another common method pays by finishing position. The international Big Two method charges losers for each card left in hand — more per card the more you’re holding. Agree on one before you start.
A few habits that win more games
- Count the 2s. There are only four. Once they’re gone, your aces control the table.
- Get rid of low singles early, while others are still willing to play small.
- Hold a five-card hand back as a way to take the lead when you need it.
- Watch the player with few cards left and don’t hand them an easy lead.
